The visit consists of a tour through history that begins with Greco-Roman theatre and later takes a look at medieval theatre, focussing on El Misterio de Elche (Mystery Play of Elx) and La Celestina, continuing with Spanish Golden Age theatre, the Corrales de Comedias, 18th Century theatre, Romanticism and Don Juan Tenorio as examples of the 19th Century, the 20th Century avant-garde and art theatre, opera, zarzuela (a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that alternates between spoken and sung scenes), dance and the “género frívolo” (a type of variety show), and concludes with the creation of The National Theatres and Festivals of Spain.
